Hurricane Sandy Deployment – Day 5

Today was pretty uneventful overall, so I went around and got some pictures of the BoO’s (Base of Operations, aka tents), and other facilities. We got washers and dryers today!!!

I needed to get off base, and really pushed to go out to dinner. I was sick of cafeteria food and snack food. Some of the Hawaii team went out for dinner (yours truly included) and ended up at Pizzaiola, which had REAL NY food. Ian is from Staten Island, and he almost insisted on cheese pizza, but conceded to the others that wanted multiple toppings.

Then, he ordered “gravy,” which I didn’t realize in NY means marinara sauce for bread dipping. Go figure. I learned about Rice Balls, gravy, and why the crust is so important (it must stay firm when the pizza is folded in half).

Fun times, and a much needed outing.
